About the Owner

Hunter Lafe is a landscaper, self-starter, and bookworm based in Tulsa, OK. Raised by a plant lover and outdoorsman, Hunter was drawn to the natural world and has always had a passion for creative pursuits. He has studied under several landscape professionals and horticulturists in the Tulsa area, participated in the Master Gardener program, and always has a book on gardening or landscaping nearby. His favorite designs involve natural landscape styles, with their dynamic plantings that thrive and catch the eye, supported by the structure of subtle yet enhancing hardscaping.

THE STEPS

Step-by-step to a beautiful garden

Phase 1: Tear Down

After the design was approved we tore out everything that wasn't included. This meant axing a few weathered shrubs (thank you for you service) and digging out stumps. We also transplanted some daylilies that still held value but didn't belong to the new theme. All yard decor and forgotten things were put out of the way, to return to after installation.

Phase 2: Staging and Installation

The longest phase! 432 plugs, 74 grasses, 50 flowering plants, 22 berry bushes and 3 fruit trees... Were brought to the backyard. We spent a few days planting according to the design. Some adjustments had to be made because, like the saying goes, "if you want to make God laugh tell him your plans." Easy adjustments this time.

Phase 3. Finishing Touches.

The quickest phase. Once every plant was where it belonged... We triple checked that this was true. After making sure everything was done well we added a thick layer of brown mulch that looked great against the cedar fence and made sure it was even and appropriate. I met with Jay and we did a walk about where I answered his questions and made sure he was happy with the work and that no changes needed to be made. He was, and nothing did. So we cleaned up our debris, put everything else back where it went and left them with their new and gorgeous garden. A few days later I emailed him a care sheet for these particular beds and that was that. We're all happy with the result and look forward to seeing it grow and home many birds, bees, and good bugs.

How much does it cost?

There is no one size fits all answer because of the complexities of each project. My goal is for my business to make a profit that I’m happy with while knowing that you are getting a good deal relative to our local market and the services rendered. I do research to make sure my prices are fair. If I was happy with the price and got the impression that you weren’t, that would be a problem. I want both of us to be happy and will do my best to make that happen. Talk to me about your needs and I will work to meet them.

What kind of experience do you have?

I’ve been at it for a long while but I’ll do my best to quickly summarize. I’ve been blessed to study under 3 experts in the Tulsa area who specialize in landscape design and seasonal displays. I also learned a lot from my father growing up. He wasn’t a landscaper by trade but he was an accomplished gardener who always had a project going. I’m also an avid reader and my obsession with plants and creating beautiful spaces is well served by that.

Where do you source your materials and plants?

I purchase local as much as I can. 99% of the time it’s from the same wholesale suppliers because the quality is great and big box stores are reliably disappointing in comparison.

How do I know my garden or landscaping will last?

Because I put my name on the company. I did that because I wanted to make it clear that you’re buying from me. When you buy from me you get accountability from me because my name is on the project. My integrity is attached to it. I use all the proven design principles needed to make sure the project will last as long as it can and I provide you with a care sheet to guide that.

Can you work within my budget?

The answer is often: yes. I want to help you, especially if you seem like a good person. If I can get my budget needs met while meeting yours then I will. Talk to me and I’ll listen because chances are we can figure something out.
